I have seven years of experience in SEO, and there is one image optimization mistake I keep seeing again and again.
People spend time writing the perfect alt text.
But they completely forget about the image file name.
It sounds like a small thing. It isn’t.
The Mistake I See on Almost Every Website
Whenever I audit a website, I find images with names like:
- IMG_2847.jpg
- Screenshot-2026-01-03.png
- final-final-image.webp
- image1.jpg
- WhatsApp Image 2026-06-10 at 10.25.34 AM.jpeg
Then I check the alt text.
Sometimes it’s beautifully written.
That tells me the person knew alt text matters.
But they uploaded the image without renaming it.
This is probably one of the most ignored parts of image SEO.
Can Renaming Images Alone Improve Rankings?
No.
Let’s be realistic.
Changing filenames alone won’t suddenly push your page to position one.
SEO doesn’t work like that.
But image SEO is made up of many small improvements.
Good filenames.
Good alt text.
Compressed images.
Proper dimensions.
Modern formats like WebP or AVIF.
Lazy loading.
Responsive images.
When all these small optimizations come together, they create a better experience for both users and search engines.
